How to tell a real cash giveaway from a fake one

"Giveaway" is one of the most abused words online, so scepticism is the correct starting position. These are the tests worth applying, and they work on us as well as on anyone else.

  • You are asked to pay something to release the prize

A real giveaway never needs a payment to pay you

Admin fees, delivery charges, taxes, currency conversion, a "verification" payment. All of it is the same scam wearing different clothes. Cash prizes in the UK are not taxed and there is nothing to ship, so there is nothing that could legitimately need paying.

  • Bank details or ID are wanted before there is a winner

Those come after a win, directly, never in a form on the way in

Entering should need almost nothing about you. We ask for an email address, because we cannot tell you that you have won without one. Account details only ever come up once you have actually won and we are arranging the transfer.

  • No company name, no rules and no address anywhere

A real promoter is identifiable and publishes the terms

You should be able to find who is running it and read the rules before entering. If the whole thing lives in one social media post with no link to anything, there is nobody to hold to it.

  • The winner is announced only by direct message

A real result is published where everyone can see it

The classic fake giveaway "winner" is a DM from an account impersonating the promoter, asking for a fee. We publish results on the site, and we never ask a winner for money.

  • The prize or the odds change as it goes along

The prize is committed and the method is fixed in advance

A prize that quietly shrinks, or a deadline that keeps moving to squeeze more entries out, tells you the promoter is making it up as they go. Our prize is committed before the draw runs, and every draw we run goes ahead on its published closing date with the full prize whatever the entry numbers.

What we ask for, and what we never ask for

To enter, an email address, a password and your date of birth, because the draw is for over 18s and the account has to be age-checked. We do not want your address, your phone number or anything about your finances, and there is no card field anywhere in the process.

If you win, we contact you on that email address and arrange a bank transfer. At that point we need account details to pay you, which is the only stage they are ever relevant. We will never ask you to pay a fee, confirm a card, buy anything, or send money to release a prize. There is no situation in which that request comes from us.

Our paid competitions work differently and it is worth knowing the difference: those have a ticket price, a published ticket cap so you can work out your own odds, and a skill question. They also all carry a free postal entry route on exactly the same odds as a paid ticket, and every one of them is drawn on its published closing date with the full prize, sold out or not. Paid entry is open to Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) only. This giveaway has none of that, because there is nothing to buy in the first place, and it is open UK wide.

Giveaway questions

Is this £500 giveaway real?

Yes, and the test of that is whether you can check it rather than whether we say so. The prize is £500 in cash paid by bank transfer, the draw runs automatically at 9pm on the closing date, and the result is published so anyone can recompute the winning entry from public data. We never ask a winner for a payment of any kind.

Do I have to pay anything to enter or to claim?

No, at either end. Entry is free and there is no fee, charge or deduction to claim. If anybody ever contacts you claiming to be us and asking for a payment to release a prize, it is not us.

Is a cash prize taxable in the UK?

No. Prize winnings from a draw or competition are not treated as income in the UK, so the £500 arrives whole. Anyone asking you to pay tax before releasing a prize is running a scam.

How many people will I be up against?

We cannot tell you in advance, because entries are still coming in and inventing a number would be dishonest. What we can tell you is that it is one entry per person with no way to buy extra entries, so nobody in the draw has a better chance than you do.

What do you get out of giving away £500?

An email address and a first impression. We are a new UK cash competition site and this is how we introduce ourselves. Whether you ever spend anything with us afterwards is entirely up to you.
