# Who can enter UK prize draws?

Last updated 2 October 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

Eligibility is set by the promoter's terms, not by a single UK law, so it varies by site. Most UK prize draws require entrants to be 18 or over and resident in the UK. Residence is what matters, not citizenship: you do not need to be a British citizen. Under-18s cannot enter a draw with an 18+ condition, and an entry from outside the stated territory is normally void. Grand Draws paid competitions are open to residents of Great Britain, meaning England, Wales and Scotland, aged 18 and over.

## Who sets the rules

There is no single UK statute that says who may enter a prize draw. Eligibility comes from the promoter, in the terms, and it can differ from one site to the next. So "who can enter" always has two answers: what the market generally does, and what this particular competition says.

Two things shape the first answer. The CAP Code, which covers promotions like these and is enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, requires significant conditions to be communicated, and lists geographical, personal and technological restrictions such as location and age among them. And the Government's Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators says operators should only make prize draws available to players aged 18 or over, with a reasonable age verification process.

## The minimum age is 18 almost everywhere

For a paid prize draw or competition in the UK, 18 is the standard. It is not a gambling age limit: a prize competition that meets the Gambling Act 2005 conditions is not gambling under the Act, so the Act's age rules do not reach it. The 18+ condition comes from the promoter's own terms, and from the voluntary code, which asks for both the limit and a reasonable way of checking it.

Free-to-enter promotions are the exception you will meet occasionally, since some are open to younger entrants with a parent's permission. The terms are the only reliable guide, and an entry that breaks the age condition is normally void even if the number comes up.

At Grand Draws, entry to a paid competition is for residents of Great Britain aged 18 and over. Age is checked at sign-up and again before any prize is paid, and that applies to the free postal route exactly as it does to a paid ticket.

## Residence, not citizenship

You do not have to be a British citizen to enter a UK prize draw. What promoters restrict is residence: where you live, not which passport you hold. Someone living in the UK on a visa normally qualifies; a British citizen living in Spain normally does not.

The reason is practical rather than patriotic. A promoter has to verify a winner, pay them, and keep the promotion inside one set of consumer and advertising rules, all of which is far simpler within a single territory.

## The four nations, and why the wording varies

Most UK prize draws say "UK residents", which covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some say "Great Britain" instead, and the reason is legal geography: apart from a few listed provisions, the Gambling Act 2005 extends only to England and Wales and Scotland (section 361), and Northern Ireland has its own gambling legislation.

A promoter relying on the Act's prize competition route often words its territory more cautiously as a result, and that is the choice we have made: our paid competitions are open to residents of Great Britain. Our free launch draw was advertised earlier and to a wider group, so it stays open to UK residents including Northern Ireland, because narrowing a promotion once people have entered it would not be fair. If a site you are looking at says Great Britain rather than the UK, this is the distinction it is making, and it is worth reading before you pay.

## Entering from abroad

If the terms say UK residents, an entry from outside the UK does not qualify, even where the site takes the payment. Verification is where it surfaces: the identity and address checks before a payout will not line up, and the entry is void.

Holidays are the usual worry and rarely a problem. Most residence conditions turn on where you live rather than where you happen to be sitting, so a UK resident abroad for a fortnight generally still qualifies. Some promotions do restrict entries made from outside the territory, though, so check the terms, or ask the promoter before you pay.

## Other conditions that can disqualify an entry

Age and residence are the two people ask about. These are the ones that catch entrants out:

- One account per person. Duplicate or shared accounts are commonly void.
- Per-person entry caps. Entries over the cap do not count, and the cap applies to postal entries too.
- The skill question. A wrong answer voids the entry, paid or posted.
- Arriving late. A postal entry has to arrive before entries close, and proof of posting is not proof of receipt.
- Self-exclusion. If you have locked yourself out of your account, entries are not taken during that period.
- A connection to the operator. Promoters commonly exclude their own staff and close family, so it is worth a look in the terms if that applies to you.

## Who can enter Grand Draws

Our own answer to all of the above, in one place:

- Paid competitions: residents of Great Britain, meaning England, Wales or Scotland, aged 18 and over, with one account per person.
- Our free £500 launch draw is open from 1 to 30 October 2026, to UK residents including Northern Ireland, as advertised. It needs a free account and one click, there is one entry per person, and it is drawn at 9pm on Friday 30 October 2026. Details at /launch-draw.
- Paid competitions open on 30 October 2026. Each one has a per-person entry cap, published alongside its ticket cap.
- Every paid competition has a free postal entry route on exactly the same odds, open to the same entrants and subject to the same conditions. The rules are at /free-entry.
- Age and residence are checked at sign-up and again before a prize is paid. A prize is not paid on an entry that did not qualify.

**Please note.** General information about the Gambling Act 2005, which applies in England, Wales and Scotland (Northern Ireland has separate legislation). It is not legal advice.

## Common questions

**Do you have to be a UK citizen to enter a prize draw?**

No. UK prize draws restrict residence, not citizenship, so someone living here without British citizenship normally qualifies while a British citizen living abroad normally does not. Grand Draws paid competitions are open to residents of Great Britain aged 18 and over, and it is residence we check rather than nationality.

**What is the minimum age to enter online prize draws in the UK?**

18 on almost every paid site. It comes from the promoter's terms rather than gambling law, and the Government's voluntary code for prize draw operators says operators should only make prize draws available to players aged 18 or over, with a reasonable age verification process.

**Can under-18s enter competitions in the UK?**

Not a competition with an 18+ condition. The entry is void even if it is drawn, and no prize is paid. Some free-to-enter promotions set a lower age limit, sometimes with a parent's permission, so the terms of that specific promotion are the only reliable guide.

**Can I enter UK competitions from abroad?**

Not if the terms are limited to UK residents, and the checks before a payout are where it shows up. A UK resident who is temporarily abroad usually still qualifies, because residence is about where you live, but some promotions restrict entries made from outside the territory.

**Can people in Northern Ireland enter?**

Our free launch draw, yes: it was advertised to UK residents and that includes Northern Ireland. Our paid competitions, which open on 30 October 2026, are limited to Great Britain. The reason is legal geography rather than preference: most of the Gambling Act 2005 extends only to England, Wales and Scotland, and Northern Ireland has its own separate gambling legislation, so the prize competition route we rely on is not the law there.
