# How to win prize competitions in the UK

Last updated 25 September 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

There is no trick that guarantees a win, and it is worth ignoring anyone who claims otherwise. What you can do is play sensibly: choose competitions with a published ticket cap, so your worst-case odds are a fact you can check before you pay; answer the skill question carefully, because a wrong answer means your entry does not count; use the free postal route if you would rather not pay, since it carries the same odds; and favour draws you can verify afterwards rather than take on trust.

## Start by ignoring anyone who promises a win

The first useful tip is a warning. No system, no lucky number and no paid "method" changes a fair draw, and a site hinting that it can is best avoided. A well-run competition can tell you your odds, never that you will win.

Everything below is about improving real chances and not wasting money. None of it is a guarantee, because an honest draw cannot offer one.

## Pick competitions where you can see the odds

A capped competition publishes the total number of tickets, so you can work your odds out before you pay: your tickets divided by that total. An uncapped prize draw can keep selling with no ceiling, so your odds get worse with every ticket sold after yours and you never really know them.

Favour the ones that show the cap. Checkable odds are the difference between a decision and a guess.

## Treat the skill question as the filter it is

On a well-run competition the skill question is real: get it wrong and your entry is void, paid or free. That trips up more people than you would think, usually through rushing.

So slow down for the one question. It costs nothing, and a wrong answer throws the entry away.

## The free route is a genuine free shot

A competition that relies on a free entry route has to offer it on the same terms as paying, and every Grand Draws paid competition has one. If you would rather not spend, that is your way in, and it counts exactly the same in the draw.

It doubles as a fair test of a site. A free route that is easy to find and clearly carries the same odds is a good sign.

## Your published odds are a worst case, not the final word

A published ticket cap is the maximum number that can ever be in a draw, so the odds you work out from it are your worst case. If a competition is drawn without every ticket sold, there are fewer entries in the hat than the cap, so your real chance comes out better than the published figure. Never worse.

Our own draws always go ahead: every competition is drawn at 9pm on its closing date whether or not every ticket sells, and the full prize is awarded. We never cancel, postpone or shrink a draw because of low sales. None of this makes a competition a way to earn, though, so play with what you are happy to spend and treat a win as the bonus it is.

## Common questions

**Is there a trick to winning competitions?**

No. A fair draw cannot be influenced by a system or a lucky number, and any site implying otherwise is best avoided. The real levers are checkable odds, a correct skill answer, and using the free route.

**Do more tickets improve my chances?**

Yes, proportionally, up to the per-person cap. Ten tickets give ten times the chance of one. The cap exists so no single entrant can dominate a draw.

**Can I really win without paying?**

Yes. The free postal route carries the same odds as a paid entry and goes into the same draw. The only cost is the stamp.
